COLOUR MIXING

This is a Triad Colour Wheel - A Triad uses Three Colours to create a colour wheel -normally they are three Primary colours -Red Yellow and Blue-But you can make a colour wheel using a different choice of three colours -No two colours can create a primary -you can not mix two colours to create a red or a yellow or a blue -This wheel is made using Aureolin Yellow -Permanent Rose for our Red and Cobalt Blue for our Blue- Place your Yellow at twelve o clock - your Red at eight o clock -and your blue at four o clock - there needs to be three blank circles between each colour making twelve circles in all - I use a two pence piece to make my circle on cheap watercolour paper -use a pencil as we rub these lines out when we have painted our wheel .

Mix your Blue and your Yellow together -we need to have enough paint to divide in half -You now have your Secondary colour Green -place this into the middle circle between your Blue and Your Yellow-Now take half of this green and add more Yellow to it -you now have Yellow Green -place this in the circle next to your Yellow -take the other half of your Green and add more Blue to it -You now have Blue Green place this in the circle next to your Blue

Now take your Blue and mix this with your Red -You now have your secondary Colour Purple -place this in the  middle circle between your Red and your Blue -Mix enough to divide in half . Take half of this Purple and Add more Blue to it -you now have Blue Purple -place this in the circle next to your Blue - Take the other half of your Purple and add more Red to it you now have Red Purple place this in the circle next to your Red.

Now take your Red and your Yellow mix them together -you now have your secondary colour Orange. Mix enough to divide in half -Place this Orange in the middle circle between your Red and your Yellow -Divide this orange in half in one half add more Red to the mix you now have Red Orange place this in the circle next to your Red-Now add more Yellow to your Orange mix you now have Yellow Orange place this in the circle next to your Yellow- Now you have a complete Colour wheel to look at and use when you plan your paintings -I have many of these wheels and  love to look at them and choose from them -when planning my paintings colour  harmonies-You can not carry a colour in your head !

    HELLERORES-STEP- -STEP-BY-STEP
  .

Mask out your stamen -for this painting we will be using- Aureolin-Quinacridone Magenta and Ultramarine-plus Sap Green - Mix a light green from your Yellow and your Sap Green -mix a dark green from your Sap Green plus your Ultramarine add a little flower colour to these greens for colour harmony - Wet around your flower and drop in your greens and a little Yellow -let the colours mingle together go around your flower and your buds but all over the leaves -leave the main stem dry

Let your first background dry completely -Now using a darker value of your first colours paint around your leaves to show them up -negative painting-do not cover all of your first background -let it show areas of light and dark-You can add more into the background if you wish- I have kept it simple to show the flower up - This is a painting about the strong  Contrast between the- Red and the Green-Complementary Colours -one enhances the other -but which one is the more powerful ?

To paint your flower use your Quinacridone Magenta plus a very small touch of Sap Green to dull the mix -and add a harmony with the background - paint each petal Wet-In-Wet using your flower colour drop in a little sap green in the centre at the sides -also paint the buds with this mix-leave areas of light showing through -continue until all petals are painted in this way  remember to show light against dark to separate each petal think about which petal is behind which-Paint in the direction of the petal -When dry paint in our vein markings.

Now add your darker green to your flower colour for the little dot like markings towards the centre of your flower -make them bold in tone to add drama to the flower-  when dry remove you're masking and paint your stamen- make a creamy Yellow for them and also a little green touch in places to separate the stamen- assess your painting can you add any finishing touches - maybe add some vein markings to a leaf -how much detail you include is up to you - I don't like a lot of detail -but you may so this is your painting -your choice-When you are happy sign your name with a rigger brush -job done-I hope you are happy with your painting.

I do realise following a step by step like this is not as helpful as watching a class demonstration, but I hope it has been helpful for you.

    BLUE-IRIS-STEP-BT-STEP
  .
First completely masked out your Iris while your masking is drying get your colours ready -for this painting I have used - Ultramarine plus Sap Green  Ultramarine on its own and Aureolin on its own -my Iris are blue but you can paint them what ever colour you choose- just remember to think of this when you plan your background colours -add some flower colour into the background for harmony -Wet your background and drop in your background colours -let them mingle together -leave some lighter areas.

Draw in some leaves and buds over your background colours -look at the areas of colour and if you see a nice area of say- Blue -use that space to add a background  bud or out of focus flower . Use your imagination - I dont like to have everything set out in a drawing before I paint -I like to leave areas for the unexpected to happen -A photograph will record very well what is in front of it -Your eyes will see the beauty before them -but the magic comes from inside- and  only you can record the colours you feel onto your painting for others to see -no camera can do that -that's when your painting is just that -a unique painting -a work of art -not a copy of what you see before you

Paint around your drawn leaves and background buds- extra flowers -what ever you have chosen to add -When dry -remove your masking and using your Ultramarine Blue plus I added a small touch of Permanent Rose to warm the blue up - paint the bottom three petals Wet- In -Wet-  use this warm Blue mix- show each petal light against dark -paint in the direction of the petal - Put in your folds and markings on the petals . Now paint the throat of your Iris -I also added a small amount of permanent Rose to my Yellow for the throat markings

Look at your painting -can you add a little blush of colour here or there -can you make a darker area even darker to show up the light area next to it ?- can you soften an edge ? Should you put a shadow underneath your flowers ?_ When you have thought about these points and have done all you want to with this painting -use your rigger to sign your name -You may not see an Iris like this in your garden -but that's the whole reason to paint it this way -This is your painting I hope you have enjoyed being Unique!          HAPPY PAINTING BEV
